It’s starting to feel like no list of fixed-blade knives will be complete without the Guardian 3, no matter how specific it is. The Braford Guardian 3 is one of the best fixed blade knives we have reviewed here at Nothing But Knives. I’m mostly including it here out of obligation. If you breathe you probably know about Bradford Knives by now. This is easily one of the most popular knives, not just for horizontal carry, but for survival and fixed-blade EDC in general. Bradford Guardian 3 The Bradford Guardian 3 is our most recommend horizontal carry knife. It’s really important to have knives with stiff sheath retention and a sturdy build in those situations. I don’t climb trees, rocks, and cliff sides like I used to, but I know that a knife in the pocket or hanging from your belt onto your leg is annoying as hell, and sometimes dangerous when you’re doing that. Hiking and climbing is where carrying a knife horizontally shines for me. Here is our current list of the best horizontal and scout carry knives in 2023: Horizontal carry seems to be increasing popularity, so we expect a lot of new options from knife companies in 2023. If you know of any great knives that you think should be included, please leave a comment below. We also remove knives once they have been discontinued and are out of stock at most major retailers. This article is updated regularly as we discover and test more fixed blade knives that can be worn in the horizontal and scout carry positions. And generally existing in a way that doesn’t involve the handle of our belt-carry knife jabbing us in the ribs every other step. Our methods tend to change depending on what season of the year it is, but the testing process generally involves the following: We have a loose criteria for how we choose what goes up here, but basically any knife that feels comfortable on the belt and is easy to draw makes it on this list. We pick up every knife made for horizontal carry that we can reasonably afford, personally wear them around for a while, then put our favorites up here. Our Personal Testing Method for Horizontal Carry Knives We have tested dozens of horizontal carry knives, and we update this article regularly as great new horizontal carry knives are released or discontinued. You can also find an explanation of the various positions and solutions for carrying knives like MOLLE and Tek Loks at the end of this article. But there are also tactical and plain, old EDC reasons for a horizontal carry fixed blade, so we’ve tried to keep this article separated by bushcraft/survival and tactical purposes. For us, it makes hiking a lot more pleasant because drop-carry knives tend to bounce and grate against our weirdly proportioned legs. There are more sensible sounding reasons to scout carry a knife, or to put it in the cross-draw position. Fashion statements aside, it’s a lot less awkward to take out a knife strapped to my left hip than it is to do the rocking butt dance to get at the folder in my right pocket. Most people equate the horizontal carry style to some kind of tactical life decision when really it’s just a comfy life decision. Additionally, this form is often used for an angry Twilight with or without explanation. In a somewhat related vein, some fan fics have explained Twilight's bursting into flame during the finale of Feeling Pinkie Keen as being a "rage shift", caused by her anger feeding into her magic, and causing a physical change. Another is to show that her power and/or ability will enable her to 'evolve' into an Alicorn like the Princesses. One semi-popular trope is to have Twilight's research or spellcasting somehow go wrong or out of control to set the events of a story in motion. Even before Lesson Zero, fans were sure that Twilight still shared a deep respect (at minimum) for the princess. In the show, her power is notable enough to have drawn Princess Celestia's attention, and both there and in fan works she is most often proud of her status as the Princess's personal protegee. She's sometimes shown as very dependent on her books to work her spells, being unable to do more than levitate objects or teleport short distances without a written spell formula in front of her. She is also the poster-filly for the myth that complex unicorn spells are unstable and that the slightest bump or a poorly timed sneeze can end up transferring body parts, swapping genders, or teleporting ponies to lands unknown. Twilight is smart, bookish, and skilled in every type of magic there is. In Magical Mystery Cure, Princess Celestia changes Twilight Sparkle from a unicorn to an Alicorn. She is very practical and grounded, often serving as the voice of reason, though she has a tendency to freak out whenever disappointing the Princess becomes a possibility, at least, in her mind. Twilight Sparkle is a studious Alicorn, and the former protege of Princess Celestia. WubcakeVA ( Fluffle Puff Tales: "All Boxed Up", Just Be Me) HeavenStare ( Erotic Lessons with Twilight Sparkle) Taylor Rose ( The Adventures of Donut Steel) PrincessRil ( Lyra and Guyra, My Little Investigations) Meredith Sims ( Fighting is Magic, Journey of the Spark, Past Sins) Summing up, very very good and nearly outstanding.Kira "Rina-chan" Buckland ( PONY.MOV, Double Rainboom, Re-enacted by Ponies, Cupcakes 2: Life of Death, etc.) The voice acting is superb, with a deeply felt and nuanced turn from Tara Strong. Discord steals every part he's in, he is hilarious and one of my favourite supporting characters on the show. The rest of the Mane 6 are true to character and all serve a purpose, my favourite here was Applejack because she is no-nonsense but tender. As does the character interaction in general. Twilight is very well fleshed out here and feels genuine. Really loved the storytelling, which has intrigue and foreboding and also a lot of touching moments. Did appreciate too that continuity was addressed quite early on too. The writing is for a vast majority of the time excellent, missing only with Pinkie Pie, with the sprinkles of humour elsewhere balancing well with the mostly mature tone. The music is typically quirky and dynamic. The colours are gorgeous on the eyes and have a lot of atmosphere, the backgrounds have such rich attention to detail and the character designs are a good deal more refined, such as Celestia. Always did like it throughout the show's run, but this aspect has advanced quite significantly over-time and the "Princess Twilight Sparkle" two parter is one of the finest examples of the early seasons. Too much of Pinkie Pie's humour is rather forced and jars a bit with the mature tone of the rest of the writing. Zecora's role here doesn't serve a lot of purpose and was basically only there for plot convenience. "Princess Twilight Sparkle: Part 1" is not perfect. Whether it is one of the best two parters of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' overall is hard to say, but it is better than the previous two parter that started off Season 3, "The Crystal Empire", and an improvement over the rushed and over-stuffed Season 3 finale "Magical Mystery Cure". With more than enough to it to make one want to continue with the rest of Season 4. Of which "Princess Twilight Sparkle: Part 1" is a very good start to (the second part is even better, have found that the second parts of the two parters tend to be superior). Which also has some below average episodes but plenty that are good and above that, which was common with all the show's nine seasons, so it was another generally solid season. Anybody that liked Seasons 1-3 on the most part, like me, will find plenty to love about Season 4. 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' mostly did very well with its two parters, some are better than others but the best are truly wonderful and none of the two parters really were show low-points. The incident was determined to have been the result of "excessive corrosion on the interior of the gondola support beam," according to the ride's manufacturer, the Netherlands-based KMG. Several victims remain in critical condition. Then, as most of you probably know, a ride called the Fire Ball malfunctioned on July 27 at the Ohio State Fair, injuring seven people, and killing one man, Tyler Jarrell. After eating my weight in funnel cake, failing to win any jumbo Rasta bananas, and getting a scenic view of the beachy sprawl from the ubiquitous Ferris wheel, I finished my reporting and was set to publish my personal, sentimental look into this enduring summer tradition. The Strawberry Fair's rides are schlepped around the States via Amusements of America, the world's largest purveyor of mobile rides. I'd made this jaunt back to my old stomping, riding, and eating grounds in June to research a story about the current state of traveling amusement parks - a dreamy slice of Americana that's still surprisingly thriving in New Jersey and fairgrounds across the country. Every summer growing up, I'd spend several nights here, breaking the rules on the Gravitron (riding upside-down is not encouraged), climbing aboard nausea-incubators like the Ring of Fire, and trying (unsuccessfully) to get carnies to buy me beer. The Strawberry Fair is an annual tradition in Oceanport, New Jersey. It was so loud but so painful and I looked up and all you see is her yelling ‘stop the ride, stop the ride,'” Morgan recalled.Nothing much had changed at the Strawberry Fair since I was a kid - except for the addition of a booth selling fidget spinners in the center of the fairgrounds. “All I noticed was a lady fall into the cage and I heard a scream like she was having a baby. Justin Morgan was standing nearby when the incident happened. There was a point where it goes up and it just stops for a second and I am laying on the plexiglass thinking, ‘this is it, I am going to die.'” Courtesy: Justin Morgan “We were screaming and this guy is not paying any attention to us. “The only thing that I could do is just hold onto my nephew because literally right next to me – it just kept going around and around,” Hepp said. Hepp was on the ride with her 10-year-old nephew. The ride was upside down when Hepp says she found herself pressed against a plexiglass-like barrier in the front row seat. Marylola Hepp says she was riding the Ring of Fire at the Manatee County Fair when she slid out from under the safety bar. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumers Services Bureau of Fair Rides and Inspections has launched an investigation. It was the first large application of this technique to systemic scleroderma, she said.Ī genetic comparison of 2,296 people with systemic scleroderma to 5,171 without the disease led scientists to a region of the genome known as CD247. In the study, scientists used a genetic research technique called a genome-wide association study that allows researchers to detect genetic variations associated with a particular disease. "Once most of the important genes are found, we will be able to focus on developing interventions to block their activity." Mayes, M.D., one of the study's senior authors and a professor of rheumatology at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, which is a part of UTHealth. "With our latest discovery, we are probably a quarter of the way to finding the genes and pathways responsible for systemic scleroderma," said Maureen D. In the May print issue of Nature Genetics, scientists report they found a new region of the human genome associated with increased systemic scleroderma susceptibility. Autoimmune diseases are caused by malfunctioning immune systems, which attack their own cells. Systemic scleroderma is a profoundly disabling autoimmune disease that affects about 100,000 people in the United States. Were you successful in reducing the echo of your audio file? Which method did you find more helpful? Let us know in the comments below. Just keep in mind that this requires lots of playing around with all kinds of different values and effects because different recording settings require different approach methods. This is a quite difficult process, but if you’re skilled or persistent enough, you might find the results satisfactory. It’s impossible to completely remove the echo, but it isn’t impossible to reduce it. After you do that, tweak the level reduction and attack/decay settings until you’re satisfied with the result. What’s most important is that you set the gate threshold. If the echo doesn’t change, increase the Gate threshold until the echo is reduced. To reduce the echo, start with an “Attack/Decay” of 75, “Gate threshold” of -30, and a “Level reduction” of -100. Make sure that Audacity is closed while doing this.
Decent margins are more useful for notes and allow comparison between the author's and reader's messages. Notes between the lines of text interrupt the authors narrative and distract the reader from what the has to say. Any typographer will tell you that correct linespacing improves the readability of text and aids reading of extended text. Double line spacing is useful for copyeditors that need to correct grammar or typography but it is not useful for much else because it interferes with the readability of the text. While I agree that making notes in a book is one way to `own' a book ( I think `finishing' a book for the author is a little presumptuous), I think that double spacing is a poor way of allowing the reader to make notes. "What a shame," I replied, thinking that one-third that many would probably be better for the readers although much harder to write. The chief of a large group producing computer manuals once told me that they "produced 46,000 pages of manuals" that year. This leads to the appearance that productivity is being measured by the page. Given frequent repetition and boilerplate, legal documents sometimes appear bulked up and puffy, all that paper for not that much substance per page. Many, although not all, of the legal documents I have seen (at The Smoking Gun, for example) have too few words per page with over-generous leading and even double-spaced lines. Maybe the empty space in the margin can be left for marginal notes written by the readers, if any. If the marginal materials are simply references, then the standard footnotes (at the bottom of each page, not ganged together at the end of the document) are fine. Of course, the big-column/little-column format should not be done mechanically there needs to be worthwhile material that naturally belongs in the margin. Long ago I once proposed to a client that computer manuals (with 8.5 by 11 inch paper imprisoned in 3-ring binders) follow the design of Feynman's physics textbook and stop wasting all that paper in the margin. The design of Feynman's pages are probably a better model than my books, which are so intense, idiosyncratic, and personal-and are therefore not a good workaday model for document design. For my books, the righthand margin column also often serves to help present big images that run the width of the entire page. So what should be done with that extra space on the right of the page when a single column of text is used? The design of my books and of Feynman's book puts small images, image credit lines, numbered notes, and references out in a narrow righthand column. (An unsatisfactory solution is to make the type real big to fill the horizontal width.) In general, a line of text should not be more than 2 or 3 alphabets long, unless there is spacious leading. That is too wide for a single column of type thus 2 columns of text are often used in books with an 8.5 inch page width. The problem fundamentally arises from the 8.5 inch page width. One page of that book is reproduced (rather small) in "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint." Here it is somewhat larger: Richard Feynman, Robert Leighton, and Matthew Sands, The Feynman Lectures on Physics. In addition, thanks to Christian Hupfer, you need to enclose the definition with \makeatletter.\makeatother since the code uses the symbol in the not literal way (see What do \makeatletter and \makeatother do?).On this issue more generally, take a look at the layout of I replaced with (added \footnotesize before #3).
